29 CFR 1915.73(c): When employees were working around large openings, the edge of the openings were not guarded in the working area to height of 36 to 42 inches: a) USS Nimitz Flight Deck, where large openings not equipped with guarding included: 1. Catapult Void #4, the unguarded opening measured approximately 385 feet in length x 49 inches in width and a depth ranging from 39-40 ½ inches. 2. JBD Pit #2, the unguarded opening measuring approximately 36 feet in length x 15 feet in width x 8 ½ inches in depth. Six additional openings located within the large opening each measured 64 inches in length x 34 inches in width x 28 ½ inches in depth.
