29 CFR 1926.251(a)(1): Rigging equipment for material handling shall be inspected prior to use on each shift and as necessary during its use to ensure that it is safe. Defective rigging equipment shall be removed from service. On August 7, 2018, employees were exposed to being struck by a falling object when the Bomag BPR 50/55D plate compactor was being lifted with a damaged wire rope sling connected to a Caterpillar compact track loader.

29 CFR 1926.251(c)(9): Slings shall be padded or protected from the sharp edges of their loads. On August 7, 2018, the wire rope sling used to lift the Bomag 50/55D plate compactor was bent over the cutting edge of the Caterpillar 257C compact track loader's bucket without padding to prevent damage.
