29 CFR 1910.1053(c): Permissible exposure limit (PEL). The employer shall ensure that no employee is exposed to an airborne concentration of respirable crystalline silica in excess of 50 mcg/m3, calculated as an 8-hour TWA.        a) At the Corning Diesel Plant, on or about 11/26/18: Employees who were cleaning out the cullet pit were exposed to concentrations of respirable crystalline silica exceeding the permissible exposure limit (PEL). Personal air sampling conducted by OSHA showed one employee exposed to an 8 hour time weighted average of 85.91 mcg/m3 which was 1.7 times the PEL. Personal air sampling showed another employee was exposed to an 8 hour time weighted average of 797.88 mcg/m3 which was 15.96 times the PEL.        Abatement certification must be submitted for this item.

29 CFR 1910.1053(f)(1): The employer did not use engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain employee exposure to respirable crystalline silica to or below the PEL, unless the employer can demonstrate that such controls are not feasible:        a) At the Corning Diesel plant, on or about 11/26/2018: Engineering and work practice controls were not implemented to reduce employee exposure to respirable crystalline silica below the PEL when employees were cleaning silica containing materials out of the cullet pit. Air sampling conducted by OSHA showed employees performing this task were exposed to levels of respirable crystalline silica exceeding the PEL.         Abatement certification must be submitted for this item.
