29 CFR 1910.151(c): The employer did not ensure that where the eyes or body of any person that may be exposed to injurious corrosive materials, suitable facilities for quick drenching or flushing of the eyes and body were not provided within the work area for immediate emergency use:    (a) Beal Distributing, Inc., 4815 North Northview Avenue, Sioux Falls, SD 57107:  On or about and at times prior to February 12, 2019, the employer did not ensure that employees exposed to injurious corrosive materials such as battery acid at the forklift charging/maintenance station had quick access to drenching and flushing of the eyes and body within the work area for immediate emergency use.  The plumbed eyewash/shower station was blocked by an inoperable forklift and a pallet of materials, and had been blocked for several months.  The eyewash/shower station was also inoperable due to the quick drench handle being installed backwards.  1. Emergency eyewash/shower station obstructed 2. Emergency eyewash/shower station lacking inspection 3. Emergency eyewash/shower station quick actuator installed backwards  Abatement Note:  ANSI/ISEA Z358.1-2014 "American National Standard for Emergency Eyewash and Shower Equipment"  Eyewash/showers shall be tested in accordance with ANSI procedures and manufacturer specifications.  Emergency eyewash and shower equipment should be available for immediate use, but in no instance should it take an individual longer than 10 seconds to reach the nearest facility.  Factors that influence the location of emergency facilities include workplace lighting, obstructions to the path of travel and the work environment.   NOTE:  Emergency eyewash, shower, drench hose and combination units are not substitutes for proper primary protective devices. As a defense against flying solid particles and splashing injurious liquids, workers should wear personal protective equipment as needed, including eye protection, face protection and protective clothing.
