OSH ACT of 1970 Section (5)(a)(1): The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in that employees were exposed to struck by and crushing hazards.   On or about August 28, 2019, in the top coat prep area conveyor lines 10 and 11, the employer did not ensure that employees required to work on the rear side of bucks (carts) were protected from struck by or caught between hazards from bucks staged on the conveyor line behind working employees. Staged bucks frequently have the back pin dropped into the floor opening housing the tow conveyor which can get caught in the conveyor pulling the buck forward when employees would not be expecting it to move. Employees were at risk to serious injuries such as, but not limited to lacerations, severe contusions, and fractures.   Among other methods, feasible means to correct this hazard include: 1) Utilize ASME B20.1-2018: Safety Standard for Conveyors and Related Equipment.     a. Install an audible warning system to alert employees prior to starting the conveyor, as described in Section 5.11.2(b);    b. Perform routine inspections on the back pins to ensure they function as intended and do not catch in the conveyor, as described in Section 5.12(h).     c. Per section 6.17.1.1(f) provide a means for employees to disengage the tow pin from the conveyor without being in front of the buck.   2) Implement a work practice prohibiting employees from dropping the back pin when staging the buck and ensure adequate spacing is providing from employees to work in-between bucks.
