29 CFR 1910.28(b)(1)(i): The employer did not ensure that each employee on a walking-working surface with an unprotected side or edge that was 4 feet (1.2 m) or more above a lower level was protected from falling by one or more of the following:  Guardrail systems, safety net systems, or personal fall arrest systems:  a) Line 1 Trench Conveyor Area in the Front End - On or about January 7, 2020, the employer did not ensure employees were protected from falls when pulling up and removing floor grates, and working around an open trench that was approximately 4 feet 4 inches in depth.

29 CFR 1910.147(c)(4)(i): Procedures were not developed, documented and utilized for the control of potentially hazardous energy when employees were engaged in activities covered by this section:  a) Line 1 Can Conveying Wet Elevator Area in the Front End- On or about January 7, 2020, procedures were not utilized for the Line 1 Can Conveying Wet Elevator to clear a jam.  b) Line 1 South Trench Conveyor in the Front End - On or about January 7, 2020, procedures were not utilized for the Line 1 South Trench Conveyor when an employee needed to access the Line 1 Trench to replace a belt on the Line 1 North Trench Conveyor that is located approximately 12 inches directly next to the Line 1 South Trench Conveyor.

29 CFR 1910.147(c)(6)(i): The employer did not conduct a periodic inspection of the energy control procedure at least annually to ensure that the procedure and the requirement of this standard were being followed:  a) Line 1 Trench Conveyors (North and South Conveyors) in the Front End - On or prior to January 7, 2020, the employer did not conduct a periodic inspection of the energy control procedure for the Line 1 Trench Conveyors (North and South Conveyors).  b) Line 1 Can Conveying Wet Elevator Area in the Front End- On or prior to about January 7, 2020, the employer did not conduct a periodic inspection of the energy control procedure for the Line 1 Can Conveying Wet Elevator.   Ball Metal Beverage Container Corp. was previously cited for a violation of this occupational safety and health standard or its equivalent standard, 29 CFR 1910.147(c)(6)(i), which was contained in OSHA inspection number 1296296, citation number 1, item number 1, and was affirmed as a final order on 04/19/18 with respect to a workplace located at 124 Carson Road, Birmingham, AL 35215.
