29 CFR 1928.57(a)(11): Where a moving machinery part presented a hazard during servicing or maintenance, the engine was not stopped, the power source was not disconnected, and all machine movement was not stopped before servicing or maintenance was performed: (a)National Food Corporation at 25351 National Avenue, Plankinton, SD 57368: On or about and at times prior to June 1, 2020, the employer did not ensure that the power source was disconnected and all movement stopped prior to an employee servicing the manure belt and drive system of the layer cage assembly. This condition exposed one employee to amputation hazards related to ingoing nip points of the unguarded sprocket and chain assembly while it was in motion.

29 CFR 1928.57(b)(2)(i): The mesh or nip-points of all power driven gears, belts, chains, sheaves, pulleys, sprockets, and idlers were not guarded: (a)National Food Corporation at 25351 National Avenue, Plankinton, SD 57368: On or about and at times prior to June 1, 2020, the employer did not ensure that a sprocket and chain assembly was properly enclosed. The sprocket and chain mechanism drives a waste removal conveyor which was located below each row of layer cages. The steel guards in place are inadequate and allow for employee contact with ingoing nip points. This condition exposes the employees to amputation hazard related to an ingoing nip point created by the unguarded sprocket and chain assembly.
