Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employee(s) in that employee(s) were exposed to the hazard of excessive heat: a) Ardagh Group, 443 S. East Avenue Bridgeton, NJ 08302, Hot End : On or about July 23, July 29 and August 2 , 2020 employees performing continuous moderate work, including changing out machine parts and swabbing equipment and ensuring that the Individually Segmented (IS) Machine continues to run , were exposed to the hazard of excessive heat generated by the casting process and multiple bottle forming machines in the production area. The employer also required employees to wear fire retardant long sleeve shirts and pants. Employees wear street shirts under the fire retardant long sleeve shirt. Temperature monitoring was done in the area by CSHO and a WBGTi average of 101.4 degrees Fahrenheit was observed, which exceeded safe levels of exposure. Such exposure may lead to the development of heat related illness such as heat stroke, heat stress, heat exhaustion or death. On July 23, July 29, and August 2, 2020 employees were hospitalized due to work related dehydration. Additionally, the employee that was hospitalized on July 23, 2020 was not acclimated to the hot environment.
