29 CFR 1910.184(d): Inspections. Each day before being used, the sling and all fastenings and attachments shall be inspected for damage or defects by a competent person designated by the employer. Additional inspections shall be performed during sling use, where service conditions warrant. Damaged or defective slings shall be immediately removed from service. a) On or about September 24, 2020 the employer did not ensure that the slings being used in the weld bays were being inspected prior to use by a competent person in that some damages and defects present were: - kinks and broken wires on wire rope slings - a knot in 1 synthetic web sling - missing identification tags on wire rope slings and synthetic web slings - fraying and tears in synthetic webs slings

Synthetic web slings shall be immediately removed from service if any of the following conditions are present: Snags, punctures, tears or cuts; a) On or about September 24, 2020 a synthetic web sling was used to perform a lift that had visible snags and tears in the sling. b) On or about September 24, 2020 at least three synthetic web slings that were available for use by welders in the weld bays had visible tears and snags in them.
