OSH ACT of 1970 Section (5)(a)(1)  The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees OSH ACT of 1970 Section 5(a)(1): The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in that employees were not protected from being struck by furnace components:  (a) In the EAF Department by Furnace #2, utility employees performed work activities such as but not limited to cleaning the sump of the furnace. Employees in the sump area were exposed to being struck by components of the furnace during the movement of the furnace's roof. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable means of abatement would be to select and utilize a means for providing effective protection from the hazardous portion of the furnace such as interlocked barrier guards, presence sensing devices, and various devices under the exclusive control of the employee. The methods must be based on generally accepted good engineering practices.
