29 CFR  1910.212(a)(1):  One or more methods of machine guarding was not provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks:  Specialty Area:  On, or about, August 3, 2022, the hood guard provided on the Victor 1640 horizontal lathe was not used to cover the rotating chuck.  Also, the operator was exposed to in-running nip points while polishing a valve stem.    Abatement Note:  The operation of polishing valve stems should be moved to a machine that creates reduces/eliminates the hazards created by rotating parts.  Sanding/polishing machines are commercially available that are designed for the task.
