Employees handling ACDelco and Interstate batteries are not provided suitable facilities for flushing of the eyes in case of accidental eye contact with corrosive chemicals. A Haws eyewash station was provided; however, was not functional at the time of the inspection. Furthermore, employees are not required to utilize eye protection while engaged in operational activities.

Employee(s) opening/closing the east garage door of the maintenance/body shop were exposed to electrical shock hazards in that flexible cords are used to power the garage door motor while attached to building surfaces. Flexible extension cords powering the garage door motor were being used while permanently attached to the building structure above and adjacent to automotive maintenance areas within the maintenance/body shop.

29 CFR 1910.132(d)(1): The employer did not assess the workplace to determine if hazards are present, or are likely to be present, which necessitate the use of personal protective equipment (PPE):  Employees engaged in automotive maintenance operations in the maintenance/body shop were exposed to chemical hazards in that the employer did not conduct a hazard assessment to determine if hazards are present, which necessitate the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Employees were handling ACDelco and Interstate batteries, Professional Cleaning Systems (PCS) brake & parts cleaner, CRC Lectra-Motive electric parts cleaner, NAPA Mac's battery terminal cleaner, ACDelco brake and clutch fluid, SeaFoam top engine cleaner & lube, ACDelco concentrate antifreeze/coolant, and ACDelco motor oil without the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). The chemical hazards associated with these chemicals include: skin and eye irritation/burns, dizziness and/or nausea, respiratory tract irritation, severe gastrointestinal damage/irritation, may cause bronchial irritation, and may cause kidney failure and cancer. Additionally, several of the chemicals can act as a fueling agents due to their flammability as a liquid and an aerosol. Recommended personal protective equipment (PPE) from the safety data sheets (SDS) suggest: safety glasses with side shields (or goggles), nitrile/vinyl or chemical resistant gloves,  and body-covering clothing/thermal protective clothing/synthetic apron.
