29 CFR  1926.50(g): Where the eyes or body of any person may be exposed to injurious corrosive materials, suitable facilities for quick drenching or flushing of the eyes and body shall be provided within the work area for immediate emergency use:  a) Demolition of Vacant Building-15 Harold Street, Westwood, NJ: An employee engaged in torch cutting of unlabeled piping was splashed with caustic chemicals, resulting in chemical burns to the upper extremity. The employer did not provide suitable facilities for quick drenching or flushing of the eyes and body, thus exposing employees to an eye injury and chemical burns to the body, on or about 7/5/23.

29 CFR  1926.850(e): The employer did not determine if any type of hazardous chemicals, gases, explosives, flammable materials, or similarly dangerous substances were used in any pipes, tanks, or other equipment on the property. When the presence of any such substances was apparent or suspected, the employer did not perform testing and purging to eliminate the hazard before demolition was started:  a) Demolition of Vacant Building-15 Harold Street, Westwood, NJ: An employee engaged in torch cutting of piping was splashed with caustic chemicals, resulting in chemical burns to the upper extremity. The employer did not determine if hazardous chemicals were present at the job site prior to allowing employees to conduct demolition work and torch cutting into unlabeled pipes that contained caustic chemicals, on or about 7/5/23.

29 CFR  1910.1200(e)(1): Employer had not developed or implemented a written hazard communication program which at included the requirements outlined in 29 CFR 1910.1200(e)(1)(i) and (e)(1)(ii) (Construction Reference: 1926.59):  a) Demolition of Vacant Building-15 Harold Street, Westwood, NJ: An employee engaged in torch cutting of piping was required to work with hazardous chemicals, including, but not limited to acetylene gas, sodium hydroxide, aluminum oxide, phosphorus pentoxide, and potassium oxide. The employee was splashed with caustic chemicals, resulting in chemical burns to the upper extremity. The employer did not develop a written hazard communication program which included safe work methods for employees to follow when working with hazardous chemicals, on or about 7/5/23.
