29 CFR 1910.106(d)(4)(i): Inside storage rooms shall be constructed to meet the required fire-resistive rating for their use. Such construction shall comply with the test specifications set forth in Standard Methods of Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials, NFPA 251-1969. Where an automatic sprinkler system is provided, the system shall be designed and installed in an acceptable manner. Openings to other rooms or buildings shall be provided with noncombustible liquid-tight raised sills or ramps at least 4 inches in height, or the floor in the storage area shall be at least 4 inches below the surrounding floor. Openings shall be provided with approved self-closing fire doors. The room shall be liquid-tight where the walls join the floor. A permissible alternate to the sill or ramp is an open-grated trench inside of the room which drains to a safe location. Where other portions of the building or other properties are exposed, windows shall be protected as set forth in the Standard for Fire Doors and Windows, NFPA No. 80-1968, which is incorporated by reference as specified in Sec. 1910.6, for Class E or F openings. Wood at least 1 inch nominal thickness may be used for shelving, racks, dunnage, scuffboards, floor overlay, and similar installations. On July 31, 2023, at a facility located at 497 Maratech Avenue in Marathon, WI; the inside storage room located in the space between the spray booths containing flammable paints, primers, and solvents was not constructed to comply with this section. Openings to other rooms were not provided with raised sills or ramps and were not protect by an inset storage room floor nor with an open-grated trench. The opening between the inside storage room and the painter's prep room was not provided with an approved self-closing fire door.

29 CFR 1910.107(g)(2): All spraying areas shall be kept as free from the accumulation of deposits of combustible residues as practical, with cleaning conducted daily if necessary. Scrapers, spuds, or other such tools used for cleaning purposes shall be of nonsparking material: On or about July 31, 2023, at a facility located at 497 Maratech Avenue in Marathon, WI; scrapers and spuds used for cleaning purposes were not of nonsparking material. Handheld tools and a long-handled spud were used to scrape and remove overspray from the spray booth walls. Both tools were made of ferrous material which could cause sparks.
