29 CFR 1910.179 (j)(3): A complete periodic inspection of crane(s) had not been conducted in the past 12 months: a) Shop Area: On or about January 29, 2025 and at times prior, the employer did not ensure complete periodic inspections of the overhead cranes were conducted within the past 12 months. Clamping devices failed and cranes were missing required over-travel limit switches, exposing employees to struck by or crushing injuries. Abatement certification required within 10 days after abatement date. The certification shall include a statement that abatement is complete, date, method of abatement, and states employees and their representatives were informed of this abatement.

The safety latch was broken exposing employees to potential struck-by or crushing hazards due to the risk of an unsecured load falling. No abatement certification or documentation is required.

29 CFR 1910.179(m)(1): Thorough monthly inspections of rope conditions, with written, dated and signed reports, were not performed on the running ropes: a) Overhead Crane 92-85: On or about January 29, 2025 and at times prior, the employer did not ensure monthly inspections of the running ropes were performed. The running ropes were found to be severely kinked, yet remained in use, compromising the crane's ability to safely lift or move loads exposing employees to potential struck-by and crushing hazards. Abatement certification required within 10 days after abatement date. The certification shall include a statement that abatement is complete, date, method of abatement, and states employees and their representatives were informed of this abatement.
