General-duty citation text
29 CFR 1910.1030(d)(4)(iii)(A)(2)(i): During use, containers for contaminated sharps shall be easily accessible to personnel and located as close as is feasible to the immediate area where sharps are used or can be reasonably anticipated to be found. At the facility located at 2 Wesleyan Terrace, Shrewsbury, MA: On or about April 17, 2025, and at times prior, the employer did not ensure that containers for contaminated sharps were located as close as feasible to the point of use. Specifically, the only available sharps container was placed on a lab bench in a hallway, outside of the surgical and dental suites where sharps are routinely used. As a result, employees were required to transport unsecured, used sharps through common corridors, navigating blind spots and turns, thereby increasing the risk of needlestick injuries and exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
