Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death
or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to
multiple injuries from a fall:
a) Employees walking and working at the 14 foot, 10 inche high level
concrete block wall, while guiding and placing the 39 foot bar joists
in the notched concrete block wall of the Storage Area, in the rear
of the Rea & Derrick Building Construction Site, located at Route 11
and Union Street in Schickshinny, Pennsylvania, were not protected
from fall hazards, November 20, 1987.
AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO
CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS:
To put up solid vertical supports, attach perimeter lines and utilize
safety belts and lanyards.
ANOTHER FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD
IS:
To construct scaffolding inside the work area of the walls to work from
the guarded platform.
