Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death
or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to:
a) Employees, Walking and working underneath the bridge deck on bridge
LR #2, State #30009; Employees exposed to a falling hazard of 90 feet
to the water during the building and dismantling of the scaffold,
sandblasting, painting and moving from one span to another. Employees
were not provided with safety belts and lanyards that could be
attached to a safety line.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this hazard is the use of safety belts and lanyards attached to
approved lifelines.
