Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of first, second, and third degree burns by not having an accessible manual shutoff valve installed on all appliances connected to a gas piping system: a) Kitchen Area - The grill, broiler, and cheese melters have no shutoff valves installed in the gas feed lines that service them. Observed 5/29/87. ABATEMENT NOTE: One feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to provide, on any appliance connected to a gas piping system, an accessible manual shutoff valve installed upstream of the union or connector and within 6 feet of the appliance it serves.
