Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being struck by an unsupported hinged trap door in the event of accidental closure: a) Kitchen Stairs leading to Basement - there was no locking mechanism to keep the trap door from closing when in the opern position. Observed 2/18/87. NOTE: A feasible and useful means of abatement would be to install a locking mechanism whereby the door could not accidently close while in the open position.
