Event description

Employee amputates fingertip while cleaning tire changer

Investigation abstract

At 3:45 p.m. on June 28, 2021, Employee #1 was cleaning the Coats X-Model Series 70X-AH-3 Rim Clamp Tire Changer. The auto shop manager was off duty, and employees were performing normal operations. The air supply to the tire changer was not shut off. While sitting on a Justrite Waste Disposal Safety Container and cleaning the outside surface, the employee inadvertently stepped on the foot pedal, actuating the closing mechanism and catching her fingertip. The employee sustained an amputation of her fingertip and was treated without hospitalization.
