An employee was attempting to help a rig crew attach an extended boom to a front-end loader. He was trying to push the retaining pin on the front-end loader back in when the operator activated the ram lever, causing the pin to close on his right thumb. His right thumb was amputated at the knuckle and he was hospitalized.
