An employee was operating a backhoe to level ground and seal an above-grade aluminum deposit at a landfill. The aluminum reacted with moisture in the ground when the operator leveled the ground, causing a reaction that produced ammonia. The operator suffered lung scarring due to ammonia inhalation and was hospitalized.
