An employee was using a sliding chop saw to cut 2 x 4 lumber boards. Two pieces of lumber were positioned on the deck and secured against the back guard. All other guards were on the saw and in use, including the retractable blade guard. The employee was performing the cut when the saw kicked and the blade amputated their thumb. The employee was hospitalized.
