An employee was standing and talking to a Department of Transportation employee about the project. They were 40 feet away from a pile-driving operation when a piece of the cast iron pile-driving hammer broke off and struck the employee's hand. The employee sustained a severed artery, laceration, and fractures in their hand, as well as contusions to a leg. The employee was hospitalized and required surgery.
