Before the incident
Walking across beach to access ocean leading a classroom activity.
What happened
Employee was instructing a class on behalf of a study abroad program. She was leading a respiratory physiology class and having students apply that knowledge in a real world environment. At the time students were participating in a snorkeling exercise to teach breathing techniques. Employee was supervising the exercise in a shallow area of the ocean but needed to access a deeper part of the water to allow the students to apply techniques on holding their breath longer. While walking across the beach the walking surface was primarily lava rock which was sharp and uneven. Employee suddenly slipped on a rock when stepping from one to another causing her to fall forward. When she fell she placed her hands out but stuck her lip and chin against the sharp lava rocks.
