Before the incident
Lifting a wheelbarrow.
What happened
On [REDACTED] ([REDACTED]) an experienced wool plant hot end operator was performing a cleaning activity on the deck near the [REDACTED] furnace that included moving a wheelbarrow of mixed batch material to a dump chute approximately 30 yards away. The operator lifted the handles of the wheelbarrow but when he took his first step forward the wheelbarrow did not move and he felt a mild pull in his back. The operator planned to revisit the task and went on break. While in the breakroom he reached down for an item on a table and felt immediate severe pain in his lower back. The employee reported the incident immediately to the shift supervisor and the plant emergency response team was notified. Due to the severe pain and lack of mobility he was transported via EMS to the local hospital. Emergency room personnel performed an evaluation including a CT scan providing a diagnosis of a strained back muscle.
