Before the incident
IV start during infant delivery resuscitation
What happened
During an infant delivery resuscitation RN was attempting to place an emergent PIV on patient. During IV placement while IV needle was inserted in patient 's right hand and RN was advancing the needle the tip of the needle punctured through the skin on the top of the hand and pricked the RN 's left index finger. RN immediately withdrew the needle from the patient activated the safety mechanism removed gloves and washed hands. There was a small needle prick noted to the left index finger pad with a scant drop of blood noted. When RN returned to unit called Ouch line and spoke to intake. They stated they would pass along the information to the nurses and the RN should expect a call back. At the time of this RL6 RN has not received a call back attempted to call the ouch line back with no answer and plans to go to ER for further instruction at the end of the shift today at [REDACTED].
