Clean Up Work Area Materials

The slide needle closer malfunctioned. After I drew the PT I placed the butterfly needle which I thought was closed onto my cart as I was putting a bandage on the PT arm. After successfully completing the blood draw I picked up the needle gloves still on to throw it away in the sharps container. As I picked up the needle I felt a sharp prick on my left pointer finger. I dropped the needle on my cart confused. I saw the needle sticking out it was not safety closed and the bevel of the needle was exposed. The slide safety mechanism on the butterfly did not properly enclose the needle leaving the needle exposed causing injury to myself.
