The employee sustained a comminuted fracture to their left thumb while operating a drill press to drill holes into a piece of stainless steel that was held in a vice the vice was clamped to the press. During the drilling process the drill bit became entangled with the metal causing it to dislodge from the vice spin and strike the employee 's thumb.
