Drawing blood on newborn

Employee states that she was drawing blood on a newborn and called over her coworker to help pull the blood from the butterfly needle with a syringe. Employee states that a 3 mL luer lock syringe is normally used for this task but no luer lock syringes were available on the unit. The coworker instead used a 10 mL luer slip syringe to collect the blood. The employee and the coworker were standing next to each other around the patient 's bassinet when the coworker attached a 25 G needle to the syringe stuck the needle into the culture bottle and attempted to inject the blood from the syringe into the culture bottle. When the coworker pushed the plunger on the syringe blood squirted out forcefully into the environment. Employee states that blood got on her face shirt and jacket. Employee states blood did not go in her eyes or nose but she is uncertain whether or not blood got in her mouth.
