Before the incident
Completing patient head to toe assessment and preparing to draw patient lab work.
What happened
Drawing patient blood work with butterfly needle. Completed lab draw withdrew needle from patient arm moved my hand to release the tourniquet when releasing the tourniquet my hand slipped and the exposed needle pierced my right thumb. After the needle stick occurred is when I activated the safety mechanism.
