Before the incident
Researching what patients needed lab drawn
What happened
During day shift on [REDACTED] labs were required to be drawn by RN 's due to no phlebotomist available. A bed side tray table was set up at the nurse 's station prior to start of our shift with the lab supplies for caregivers to use supplied by lab. The safety blood collection set and luer adapter were not auto retractable. Caregivers working with these supplies were not familiar with the proper usage. While disposing of the needle into the sharp 's container after drawing blood this RN sustained a potential needlestick injury. This RN had on chemo gloves and could feel the needle but did not see blood. The injury occurred due to unfamiliarity with the device 's safety mechanism and the absence of an automatic retraction feature. The RN reported the injury to the house supervisor and surgical assistant nurse manager.
