Putting edge rippers in the film web

Process operator was putting the rippers in on line 11 using the Martor safety utility knife. He had separated the film plys and was positioning the film opening over the ripper blade assembly. When he released the film to begin ripping the film piled on top of the ripper assembly and began to break out. The employee still had the utility knife in his left hand with the blade retracted. In a rush to keep the film from breaking out he reached with his right hand first then his left hand to pull the film. He squeezed the knife handle in his left hand without realizing it as he was reaching to pull film. The open blade hit the knuckle on his right hand thumb causing a 1.5 inch cut.
