Before the incident
The employee was doing her regular duties for the time of day. She was taking out the linen and trash carts from the Emergency Department to the recycling center. Then she takes the bags of trash and disposed of them individually into the trash compactor.
What happened
Originally there was a phlebotomy needle sticking out of the bag that was the cause of the needlestick. Also the bag was left wide open and I had noticed several other needles that were disposed of in the plastic trash bag. She grabbed the bag out of the trash bin and doing so the needle had poked into her most distal bone on her left pinky. The pinky afterwards was continuously bleeding.

Object or substance involved
Needle sticking out of linen trash bag.
