preparing insulin pen

Writer had insulin pen and needle ready for subcutaneous injection into the back of patient 's left arm. Due to patient 's low BMI patient did not have much fat to pinch and as writer poked the needle into patient 's arm the needle poked through patient 's skin and pricked writer 's left thumb. Writer felt the prick and could see a scant amount of blood under the glove. Writer removed gloves and washed with soap and water and immediately notified the charge nurse.
