Before the incident

The employee was inspecting a semi to ensure it was ready for operation. This includes checking the oil and other fluids tire pressures and other routine pre-trip inspection items.

What happened

The employee described a minor belly ache of pain in abdomen that progressively got worse. The initial symptom was felt while opening the semi hood to check the oil and additional discomfort was felt while checking tire pressure. There is no indication that anything unusual or overly strenuous occurred during the inspection.

Injury or illness

The employee re-injured a pre-existing inguinal hernia of lower abdomen.

Object or substance involved

To the best of my knowledge the employee suffered an inguinal hernia of lower abdomen in 2020 and the employee or surgeon at that time declined to repair it. Apparently the pre-existing inguinal hernia was further injured during a routine pre-trip inspection. The employee indicated that when the physician palpated the hernia to push the intestines and tissue back into the abdomen there was concern that sending him home would cause intestines to push through the inguinal hernia.
