Before the incident
During the pushback disconnect process after removing the towbar and headset the employee attempted to close the communication panel used with the pilot. One of the three push buttons on the panel would not fully lock into place. The employee opened the panel to check for any obstruction found nothing and tried closing it again without success. To resolve the issue the employee applied pressure with the left thumb while pressing the release button with the right thumb to free the mechanism. This allowed the panel to close properly. While applying pressure the employee felt a “pop” in the thumb and experienced immediate pain holding the hand for several seconds.
