Before the incident
Picking up down cans. Aligning cans on conveyor going into loader
What happened
Operator working on load side tried picking up down can before brake came down and his hand got caught between the cans and brake. He was attempting to remove down can under the brake area and or sweep area from the infeed side. SOP requires the operator to flag the safety light curtain at the sweep in order to remove down cans. Operator at HMI didnt notice that employee had his hand caught in between the brake and can. It was 31 seconds before co-worker at the HMI was able to reset the sweep and brake thus releasing the brake off the injured employee 's right hand. .
