Repair of shaft vertical drive assembly which was stuck in upright position

A Maintenance technician was working to replace a v wheel which serves as a guide for the vertical drive assembly of the parts shaft At the time of the incident the vertical drive assembly had been out of alignment within its guide rails and required realignment to complete the v wheel replacement While working to realign the drive assembly within its guiderails the maintenance technician manipulated the shaft by hand in attempt to realign the assembly Manipulating the shaft by hand resulted in the rack and pinion which had been supporting the shaft to become disengaged resulting in the shaft freefalling downward and in turn pinching the technicians pinky between the top of the shaft and the table
