Before the incident
The operator ([REDACTED]) and driver ([REDACTED]) had just cut a weld out of the line and were standing by to tie-in a 39” x .0187 gauge 460 grade coil on the south winder of F-11. Both individuals were wearing proper PPE during the incident. The line was moving at 28 feet per minute as required by the standard annealing cycle for the coil.
What happened
The injured operator was receiving and guiding the start of the strip underneath the south winder mandrel with both hands when the tip of his left thumb became trapped in the pinch point between the top of the strip and the bottom of the empty core as the coil made its first wrap. At the same moment the driver was on the other side of the winder taping the strip to the empty steel core on the winder when the operator yelled to the driver to stop. The driver took his foot off the winder foot pedal which halted any further rotational movement of the winder immediately. The operator then pulled his trapped left thumb out of the wrap of the coil. The pressure of the edge of the strip in combination with the operator forcefully pulling his thumb out resulted in a ¾” avulsion to the bed of the left thumb nail (note: the operator already did not have a thumb nail prior to this incident). The glove remained stuck in the coil at the pinch point. The driver pulled the glove out afterward whic
Injury or illness
