Injury (code 1)

bunionectomy; assisting surgeon passing instruments

During what should have been a 2 scrub case I [alone] was assisting the surgeon by holding the patient 's foot with my left hand while also holding a retractor in my right hand. The surgeon had placed a .09 kwire through the fixation point on the first metatarsal head then proceeded to drill over the kwire with a 2.0 canulated drill bit. The surgeon accidentally drilled too far thereby sending the kwire and drill bit through the patient 's bone skin and into my left index finger palmar side. I was wearing 2 pairs of gloves [on each hand] at the time.

LACERATION TO FINGER

Kirschner k wire and 2.0 cannulated drill bit
