Maintenance mechanics were underground preparing to perform preventative maintenance on Miller Welder. The welder 's battery was dead so the mechanics began to charge the battery. Accessing the battery connectors in an area near the engines fan blade. The design of the guard on the fan blade has an opening at the bottom to allow for space over the shaft. the proximity of this guard opening fan to the battery connector was approximately less than 2 inches.

Employee was charging battery on Miller welder to perform preventative maintenance once it was started the exhaust was blowing in workers face. When the worker reached in to remove jumper cables they did not notice that the battery was so close to the fan and their finger hit fan blade cutting the top and bottom finger on right hand.

Laceration to fingers.
