Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death
or serious physical harm to employees:
In the Parcel Sorting Building, between the Sort and Distribution
Areas, employee(s) were exposed to the hazard of being struck by
boxes and packages weighing up to 70 pounds falling from overhead
conveyors located at elevations of up to 20 feet above the floor
level.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this hazard is to comply with ANSI-B20.1-1987, Section 5.9.2(C)
Safety Standard for Conveyors and Related Equipment.
Specific elements of the abatement program shall be expected to include,
but not necessarily limited to installing spill guards, pan guards, or
the equivalent, on the overhead conveyors in order to catch, retain
and/or contain any spilling in areas where employee(s) are required to
work or walk in the same proximity to them.
