On and prior to 5/3/94, employees were exposed to serious burns from
erupting molten metal
while melting pig iron in the Inductortherm induction furnace.
Among other methods, the following are feasible and acceptable methods to
minimize the
probability of molten metal eruption due to the daddition of incompatible
materials:
(1)Develop operating procedures for furnace charging and the addition of
materials to
the melt.  The procedures must include information on how to determine the
compatibility of
additives such as, but not limited to, slag coagulant, and the
establishment of appropriate
times and conditions for such additions.
(2)Train all affected employes on the requirements set forth in the
procedures.
(3)Enforce employee use of the procedures.
