Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:
The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment
which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to
cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees
were exposed to falls from tripping hazards while riding conveyor.
(a) On or about 12/9/92, employees were riding the conveyor belt on
the baler machine sorting cardboard and noncardboard items. There
is a great potential for tripping/slipping on the cardboard and the
3" riser on the conveyor belt.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct
this hazarrd is to redesign the belt conveyor and provide handling
tools to employees.
