Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death
or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to
a recognized hazard of burns and/or smoke inhalation:
a) M/V Arctic Enterprises:  Employees aboard the M/V Arctic Enterprises
were not provided with an operational automatic fire and/or smoke
detection system in that the fuses had been removed from the main
fire alarm control box.  This condition subjected the employees to
the possibility of not being warned and escaping a fire, resulting
in burns and/or smoke inhalation.
b) M/V Arctic Enterprise:  Employees may have occasion to use the 1-1/2
inch cotton jacket, rubber lined fire hoses in the office passageway
in the day room and the engine room, starboard side, which were not
inspected annually.  This condition subjected the employees to the
possibility of using a defective fire hose while fighting a fire,
resulting in burns.
c) M/V Arctic Enterprises:  Employees may have occasion to use the 1-1/2
inch cotton jacket, rubber lined fire hoses in the office passageway
in the day room and the engine room, starboard side, which were not
physically inspected for deterioration and were improperly reracked.
This condition subjected the employees to the possibility of using
a defective fire hose while fighting a fire, resulting in burns.
d) M/V Arctic Enterprises:  Employees in the main deck fish pump room,
port side may have occasion to use the carbon dioxide fire
extinquisher that had not been inspected monthly.  This condition
subjected the employees to the possibility of using a defective fire
extinguisher while fighting a fire, resulting in burns.
Among othe methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this hazard is to bring the present fire detection system in
compliance with the National Fire Protection Association.

employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were

or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to
a recognized hazard of electrical shock, burns and/or electrocution:
a) M/V Arctic Enterprises:  Employees in the forward work area at number
1 hatch and the Surimi locker had occasion to work the 440/220-volt
circuit breaker boxes which were not equipped with cover plates over
live electrical parts.  This condition subjected the employees to the
the possibility of contacting current carrying parts, resulting in
shock, burns, or electrocution.
b) M/V Arctic Enterprises:  Employees in the passageway to the ship's
office had occasion to work the 110-volt junction box that was not
equipped with a cover to keep employees from contacting live
electrical parts.  This condition subjected the employees to the
possibility of contacting current carrying parts, resulting in
shock, burns, or electrocution.
c) M/V Arctic Enterprises:  Employees in the number 1 hatch, forward
deck, had occasion to use the Milwaukee 14-inch electric chop saw
which had two poorly made splices in the cord and part of the outer
insulation jacket was missing. This condition subjected the employees
to the possibility of contacting the partially insulated conductors,
resulting in shock.
Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to
correct these hazards are to (a) install a cover plate or inserts into
the missing circuit breaker openings, (b) install a cover plate over the
4-inch junction box, and (c) install a new cord on the chop saw.
