Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to a recognized hazard of electrical shock or burns:
(a)M/V Harvester Enterprise:  Employees working with a Makita chop saw had
occasion to use a tool that had the ground contact broken off or removed
on the
power cord plug in.  This condition exposed employees to electrical shock
or
burns in the event contact was made and the employee became a source to
ground.
(b)M/V Harvester Enterprise:  Employees working with a Makita chop saw had
occasion to be exposed to a damaged power cord that had numerous breaks
and
cuts in the exterior insulation cover.  This condition exposed employees
to
personal injury in the event that electrical conductors were bared and
contact was
made by employees with live conductors.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method of abatement would
be to replace the power cord.

area had
occasion to be near an electrical panel breaker box that did not have the
unused
breaker openings effectively closed or covered.  This condition exposed
employees to live electrical conductors should the employee enter the
panel box
to access the breakers in an emergency.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method of abatement would
be to install covers over the openings.
(b)M/V Harvester Enterprise:  Employees working or walking in the galley
area had
occasion to be near an electrical panel breaker box that did not have the
exposed
electrical conductors effectively protected or covered.  This condition
exposed
employees to live electrical conductors should an employee enter the
panel box
to access the breakers.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method of abatement would
be to install a cover over the conductors.
Arctic Alaska Fisheries Corporation was previously cited for a violation
of this
Occupational Safety and Health Standard or its equivalent standard which
was
contained in OSHA Inspection Number 107107567, Citation Number 1, Item
Number 2, issued on 6/04/90.
