Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed: a. The hazard of fire and explosion during the curing process for retread tires when air was used to inflate the tires inside the molds, on or about October 30, 1992, an explosion occurred in lodi monocure mold #208 during the retread curing process, on or about October 30, 1992. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to use nitrogen or other inert gas to inflate the retread tires in the molds during the curing process.
