Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death
or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to:
a) Hazard of explosion and fire. Mold crews in the mold department were
using WD-40, a combustible petroleums product, to lubricate curing
rims of giant off-the-road tires. During the retread curing process,
the tire with curing rim are inflated to 187 psi and then neated to
300 degrees fahrenheit, as ignition source, on or about June 27, 1989
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this hazard is to follow the equipment manufacturer's procedures
and industry practice to use only a non-petroleum, silicone lubricant on
curing rims.
